Quality assurance certifications: what they mean for your business

18 Dec, 2023

Quality: it’s a term we widely use to describe the standard of what we eat, watch and wear and even the people we meet!

But when it comes to quality in the print and packaging industry, not all products and services are equal.

Beyond just committing to “high quality”, many printing and packaging specialists like us hold internationally recognised quality assurance certifications, which are testament to our commitment to excellence, industry best practices and you: our valuable clients.

Understanding printing quality certifications

Clients expect assurance that their print materials will be of exceptional colour accuracy, print clarity, sustainability and overall quality. Internationally recognised standards and certifications set agreed benchmarks for quality, safety, reliability and even sustainable or ethical practices.

Exploring packaging industry standards

Packaging is a powerful aesthetic and marketing tool. It’s also an important safety function in many industries. For example, pharmaceutical and medicinal packaging must meet stringent standards because they need to display product information and securely protect the items inside. Food packaging must safely and hygienically store food in a range of food-grade fridge, freezer, microwave and oven-safe products.

Our commitment to quality at Rawson

At Rawson, quality is fundamental to what we do. We always strive for industry best practice—not just in Australia but worldwide. That’s why we’re proud to have the following internationally recognised industry certifications and initiatives in place:

  • ISO 9001 quality certification.
  • ISO 12647 colour certification.
  • FSC certified printing.
  • EcoVadis (Silver) member.
  • A company-wide quality assurance program.

But what do these printing and packaging certifications mean? How do we earn them? And how do they ensure precision, consistency and reliability in your printing and packaging materials?

What’s ISO 9001 certification?

ISO 9001 is one of the most well-known standards for quality management, with more than one million organisations in 189 countries holding the certification. Issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), it provides a framework for businesses of all sizes and industries—not just in printing and packaging.

To earn ISO 9001 certification, we need to operate a quality management system that addresses seven principles: customer focus; leadership; engagement of people; process approach; improvement; evidence-based decision making; and relationship management.

These principles help businesses like ours continually improve quality management systems and consistently deliver products and services that meet your needs. Continual improvement is important because it means we’re always on the lookout for ways to operate more efficiently, sustainability and economically, without compromising on quality.

Rawson has also developed its own company-wide quality assurance program and standard operating procedures for every step of production, specifically to guarantee product integrity, compliance and safety and meet the rigorous standards required for pharmaceutical packaging. We regularly have independent and customer-led audits for compliance, performance tracking and continuous improvement—which is why we’re trusted suppliers for more than 10 pharmaceutical companies who audit us annually.

What’s ISO 12647 certification?

It’s no surprise that colour accuracy is vital in printing. Even the slightest colour deviation from what’s expected can impact the overall appearance and brand perception of your products.

ISO 12647 is an internationally recognised standard to address colour management in print. It ensures that a printer follows strict colour management practices for consistent and accurate colour reproduction, which are rigorously tested and independently audited before certification is issued.

What’s FSC certification?

The internationally recognised Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain-of-custody certification ensures that the paper and other forest-based materials used in printing and packaging are sourced from responsibly managed forests, and are being sourced through fair labour conditions. It’s critical in our ability to supply eco-friendly and sustainable products, and our commitment to ongoing environmental sustainability.

When a business like ours holds FSC certification, it means we’ve implemented a management system that meets these conditions set out by FSC—and when you choose to use FSC certified paper stocks, you can include the globally recognised FSC® logo on your materials.

What’s an EcoVadis rating?

EcoVadis provides a holistic sustainability rating service for companies using evidence-based assessments of non-financial management systems including environmental, labour and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement. Rawson has been awarded a Silver EcoVadis Medal, which places us among the top 25 percent of 100,000+ companies assessed by EcoVadis.

Benefits of quality assurance certifications

We’re rightly proud of our certifications, but they’re not just about slapping a badge on a website and forgetting about it.

By being certified we pass along a bunch of benefits to you—which is why clients should opt for certified experts in the industry every time they consider their next printing or packaging job.

Quality assurance and consistency

We employ rigorous quality control measures like inspections and testing throughout the printing and packaging processes. These prevent errors and defects, reduce the risk of reprints, minimise waste, help deliver consistent results, and ultimately ensure the final product meets specified standards and your expectations.

Environmental responsibility and a variety of high-quality products

We use sustainable and environmentally conscious production practices, such power saving measures and reduced use of chemicals in our printing presses. By being FSC certified, in addition to supporting responsibly sourced materials, we can offer different paper choices for your jobs. We also use a range of eco-friendly inks, papers and finishes.

Specialised expertise

Certification often means specialised training for our team. They bring this extra knowledge, skills and expertise to your job, ultimately delivering superior results.

On time and on budget

The more efficient and accurate the production process, the better we are at delivering your job on time and to budget.

Brand reputation

Working with a certified supplier can help differentiate you from a competitor and build consumer confidence in your brand.
